Magnificent Obsessions: The Artist as Collector at The Barbican

Magnificent Obsessions: The Artist as Collector at The Barbican

06/04/2015

This exhibition was far more engrossing than expected. Collecting is variously described as an illness, an obsession, a response to early material deprivation, the desire for acquisition…I could go on but I think you get the idea. The artists featured include Arman, Peter Blake, Hanne Darboven, Edmund de Waal, Damien Hirst, Howard Hodgkin, Dr Lakra, Sol LeWitt, Martin Parr, Jim Shaw, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Andy Warhol, Pae White […]

Seen at The Country Living Fair

02/04/2015

I popped in to the recent Country Living Fair heading, as usual for the food stands, and found a few other things besides as you can see below. First of all though, I liked the Irish coffee kit offered by Coole Swan. I don’t have a great tolerance for whiskey, cream or coffee separately but […]

The recent solar eclipse

30/03/2015

Well, did any of you actually see anything when we had the solar eclipse on the 20th March? I was working from home that day and noticed that it got a bit darker for a while – that’s what low cloud will give you. I did have Stargazing Live running on my laptop (click here to […]

Extreme weather – an inspiration

26/03/2015

I was stuck in a doorway during a powerful and dramatic storm, moved to photograph the rain and hail downpour for its sheer power and beauty.  It lasted for quite a long time and yes, I did wait till it was over before moving on, glad to have caught some of the force on camera.

Textures and finishes from Surface Design in London

23/03/2015

Much of my artwork concerns the act of mark-making so texture and finish are things I always notice. This was the case at Surface Design, a trade fair I pop into; here are a few of the things that caught my eye: Matt ceramic tiles designed by Inga Sempé for Mutina shown by French company Vicalvi […]

Slow Movement by Roman Signer at The Barbican Curve.

19/03/2015

This show at The Barbican is on for about 3 months, during which time artist Roman Signer’s slow-moving kayak will have travelled 450 miles, the distance from London to his home in Zurich. The passage of time and our perception of it are his ongoing concerns. His exploration of both fast and slow time are […]
