Aida Silvestri with Roman Road Gallery at Start Art Fair

08/10/2015

More issue-based work was presented by Roman Road Gallery, this time on one of the pressing issues of our times, the refugee crisis. This work, Even This Will Pass, by photographer Aida Silvestri, is a moving document of individual journeys made by Eritrean refugees to the UK. I’ve only included a few shots here but visit the site […]

Work by Batia Shani seen at Start Art Fair

05/10/2015

If the Tories’ hero gets it then why can’t Cameron’s lot? Tamar Dresdner Art Projects, a pop-up gallery based in Tel Aviv, showed work by Israeli-born artist Batia Shani. Her expressions of anxiety and fear relating to the region’s conflicts are clear for all to see.

A vintage summer fair – Carter’s Steam Fair

27/07/2015

Now that Dreamland in Margate has reopened, the vintage fun fair seems to be on the rise. An earlier concept is Carter’s Steam Fair, started in 1977 by John & Anna Carter, who began collecting old fairground rides and restoring them before touring the country to share their enthusiasm. Everything is lovingly restored, even the show […]

New Designers – textiles

13/07/2015

I always visit New Designers with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. The former as I’m going to see new work, the latter as there is so much to cover in the limited time I have. The work that catches my eye is rarely obviously commercial although some, like these textured screen ideas below by Kirsty Tuckwell at […]

Ulster University – first time exhibitors from Belfast at New Designers

09/07/2015

I know one of the tutors from Ulster University from many years ago and was pleased to see that the Belfast School of Art were showing at New Designers – as the only college there having to cross water to get here, the financial commitment is a serious one. The work was quite varied as the two students below illustrate. […]

Tracy Kendall at Clerkenwell Design Week

10/06/2015

Tracy Kendall showed some new wallpaper designs at The Order of St John, St John’s Square during Clerkenwell Design Week. Designs included pockets. machine embroidery and painterly effects. They’re fabulous as features and also very easy to live with. Here is a papered wall in the Farmiloe Building. See what I mean?
