I always visit New Designers with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. The former as I’m going to see new work, the latter as there is so much to cover in the limited time I have.
The work that catches my eye is rarely obviously commercial although some, like these textured screen ideas below by Kirsty Tuckwell at Glasgow School of Art, have an instantly practical application
Origami has always been around – I remember being taught to make a swan at primary school – and Sarah Tran’s pieces, on the Bucks New University stand, were exquisite. Not immediately practical but they nourish the soul. Printed and embellished textiles for fashion looked good at De Montfort University, especially Meagan Wells‘ eighties inspired flocked and devoréd collectionand I liked the way Kelly Rowe presented her collection on the Wolverhampton stand – it made me want to see more.
