I know one of the tutors from Ulster University from many years ago and was pleased to see that the Belfast School of Art were showing at New Designers – as the only college there having to cross water to get here, the financial commitment is a serious one.
The work was quite varied as the two students below illustrate.
I adored the purity of Alice Blackstock’s vision; she calls herself an explorer and has combined knitting and illustration to create a hermetic reality that is completely hers.
Her sketchbooks burst with context and detail. Another knitter but oh so different, Siri Mattsson hand dyes and knits structured garments using a sophisticated colour palette. Colour more than structure was on display; much of her work is very three-dimensional. The more you look the more is revealed.
I’ll be very interested to see what they do next.
