One-minute blog of interesting things

rss iconSubscribe to my blog

As a working contemporary artist I visit many exhibitions and shows, but sometimes it is the things I see that are part of daily life that capture my interest. My one-minute blog of interesting things reflects the fact that although we are increasingly time-poor, there is creativity all around us. Email me at info@carolinebanks.co.uk with your name and email to receive a weekly post that only takes 1 minute to read.

Pigeon Air Patrol in London

11/04/2016

If you live in a city and want to know more about the air quality in your area then get in touch with the Pigeon Air Patrol. This innovative idea involves pigeons flying around (as they do) equipped with tiny little air monitoring backpacks devised by Plume Labs, which report on the quality of our air. […]

The photography of Leslie Jean-Bart

07/04/2016

I came across this exquisite and moving work by Haitan-born photographer Leslie Jean-Bart quite by chance. He now lives in New York and says “Cultures constantly interact in a dynamic way when one lives permanently in a foreign land. In my series ‘Reality & Imagination’, I photograph the tide to explore that interaction” Here are some images from this project.

More images from Cuba

These ones just amused me: for the football fans; for the fashionistas; Rico means “rich” or “cute” and so much for anonymity.

Street art in Cuba

31/03/2016

Here are some photos of art I saw when wandering around back streets up & down Cuba. I hope you like them. In Havana In Baracoa, In Cienfuegos and in Camagüey.

Living in an art gallery – the Casa de Arte Jover in Camagüey, Cuba

28/03/2016

This is the home of Cuban artists Joel Jover and Ileana Sánchez, open to the public and, I think, worthy of a feature in World Of Interiors magazine. The building itself is beautiful as so many others in Cuba, full of their paintings and collections of antiques and bric-a-brac mixed up in a riotously bonkers interior. Like […]

Fusterlandia, Havana 2 of 2

24/03/2016

The magic continues outside José Fuster’s house and into the neighbouring streets with other residents joining in and the participation of community groups. The revolution is of course included, with the Granma leading Latin-American countries and characters in this huge mural.

Fusterlandia, Havana 1 of 2

21/03/2016

This ongoing project, seen during my recent trip to Cuba, initially began in artist José Fuster’s house in the Havana suburb of Jaimanitas over 20 years ago, and has gradually spilt out into the streets of his neighbourhood. His home is the centrepiece, a totally immersive environment of crazy mosaic and painting Fuster has blended […]

More figurative art from The Columbia Threadneedle Prize

17/03/2016

In a less traditional format, these other pieces also appealed: The fetishistic and a bit scary Powerdog by Susan Stoppani The Gardens of Zoological Mutations by Jon Bentley (oil & acrylic) in tribute to the Ladybird books of my childhood, since reinvented, and the Tinder-inspired drawings The Yes and The No Pile by Rebecca Harper

Figurative Art Today: The Columbia Threadneedle Prize

14/03/2016

Ah, it’s all about the mark making. Here is a selection of some of the work I enjoyed at the recent Columbia Threadneedle Prize exhibition for figurative art, held at the Mall Galleries earlier this year. Please click on the links to find out more about the artists featured as my photos can’t really do them the justice […]

Louise Bourgeois at the London Art Fair

10/03/2016

Anything by Louise Bourgeois is worth looking at in my book – this woman worked as an artist for most of her life and was only recognised in her later years. As I heard someone say recently: if you’re a female artist the one thing you need in your lifetime is longevity and Bourgeois fortunately […]
