After experiencing 512 Hours by Marina Abramović (which I highly recommend) I had a quick look at this year’s Serpentine Summer Pavilion by Chilean architect Smiljan Radić The apparent flimsiness of the cocoon surprised me, contrasting with the monumental boulders. I really liked the lighting too

Ham Yard, the new Firmdale hotel in London
I visited the newly opened Ham Yard Hotel in Soho on a warm evening and it was characteristically buzzy both inside and out. The latest and largest hotel by the Firmdale Group is very much a place to be seen so avoid now if you’re looking for discretion and absolute privacy. Always good to see a Tony Cragg sculpture, in the […]
Jean Paul Gaultier at the Barbican
Ah, the joy of active encouragement to photograph an exhibition (no flash, of course). The Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition at the Barbican , on till the 25th August, celebrates his world with animated faces on mannequins which sometimes speak to you. This post is much more about images than text so enjoy and go to see it […]
Kai Venus-Demetrio at One Year On – New Designers

Fortunately his mobile Cabinet of Curiosity hadn’t yet been delivered so it filled the gap. Many thanks to his client who rose to the challenge, providing the drawer contents to […]
One Year on at New Designers – Head and Haft
It was a real surprise to find Head and Haft showing here as I’d already seen Chris’s work at Clerkenwell’s House of Detention earlier in the year. A Falmouth University graduate, his business has developed fast thanks in part to his ongoing work producing bespoke lamps for Nando’s. Yes, you heard me right. I have […]
Luke Bishop – One Year On at New Designers
I enjoy seeing the diversity of age and background of recent graduates at New Designers and this year was no exception. I was drawn to Luke Bishop’s lachrymatories (receptacles for tears) and dishes in the One Year On section. The different sculptural combinations produced by stacking various elements tell a story and the elastic bands […]
