London Jewellery Week which ended a few days ago includes Treasure, a selling space for small independent designers with an area for ethical jewellery. The ethical angle wasn’t one I had really given much thought to before. We all know about “blood diamonds” but how many of us consider the conditions under which gold and other components are produced for our pleasure?Well , more designers are thinking about where they source their raw materials.
Ute Decker is one such maker whose elegant and wearable pieces attracted me immediately. I was also impressed to discover only later that she produces “ethical” jewellery. I have to confess that I hadn’t even noticed that as I was too busy looking at the arm pieces. These ones pictured are made of recycled silver.
Her website gives plenty of information on the background of materials as well as sharing ethical sourcing for other jewellers. I’m regularly amazed at how many jewellers there are working away (Cockpit Studios just down the road has plenty more). It demonstrates just how creative this country is.
If you need more information on contemporary jewellers in London please contact me.

Hi, i am conducting some market research for my degree in the creative arts. Would you be able to give me any figures on the amount of jewellers that specialize in the kind of jewellery that i make. I realize that this is not an easy task, as i am finding out but i figured if i dont ask ill never know. I appreciate you spending time to read this and even if you cant help, i thank you all the same. Thanks. Jay

Hi Jason,
I looked at your site and loved the work – can’t say I know of many jewellers whose work resembles yours apart from the range I see at New Designers. Really sorry I can’t help you on this. Does anyone else have any idea? It feels more sci-fi than art-deco although I can see the connections. Good luck with your degree and please keep me updated.
