I‘m sure the customised art mini looked fab as they were painting it but we couldn’t see too much in the dark on the way to the private view.
The lighting was better inside where I was drawn to Lauri Hopkins‘ colour compositions which she told me are made from old hard backed book covers. I like her response to the discarded and neglected, dealing with memory as well as the formal concerns of composition, balance and space.
Rod McIntosh, poster boy for the invitations this year, had invited me to see his new large monoprints. The mulberry paper he uses is, to quote him, “like working with wet loo paper”. I’ll happily stick with my 800gsm watercolour paper for now thanks.
The print below is about 3 x 1.2 metres so you can imagine the casualty rate. The friend I’d brought along, Samson Soboye, found the black pieces a bit plain for him and said he’d like a bit of gold in there to brighten things up which made me laugh but, to our surprise, Rod pulled out some pieces with water gilded gold leaf which are rather fabulous. This piece had disappeared, already sold soon after taking the photo.
He’s also done some silver point drawings on gesso – so delicate. Oh yes, Samson instagrammed us too – my first ever.
