This curved hotel re-opened in April 2013 right next to the wonderful Kings Cross extension so is still very new to the London hotel scene. The architects restoring and updating the building were Dexter Moren Associates with interior design by David Archer Architects.
The bar is most people’s point of entry and, with its mirrored ceiling, has a slightly decadent, late night air about it. I could imagine this as the location for a modern and rather more glamorous Brief Encounter.
There are 3 room types with pretty snug sizes: 14 to 21 sqm but we didn’t feel cramped. This Cubitt room on the first floor, is very light and airy with windows on two sides.
The bedside tables were inspired by old fashioned vanity cases.
The room overlooked the new King’s Cross square, still under construction, and I couldn’t hear a thing from outside thanks to effective soundproofing.
The Couchette rooms are really bijou, barely wider than the window but I love the view of King’s Cross roof.
The Wainscot rooms in the mansard are so cosy and romantic, you feel miles away from the centre of a city.
Each floor has a pantry at the end of the corridor offering soft drinks and fresh cakes, a lovely touch.
Plum + Spilt Milk, the hotel restaurant is accessed via a lovely wooden staircase – check the treads when you go up. There is artwork on the walls and the plan is to use the stairwell to showcase new work. I liked the fact that all cutlery here is pre-loved and mismatched. For some reason my photos of the dining room wouldn’t download so I’m afraid I can’t show you the table settings.
The Kiosk is outside the hotel, serving snacks and drinks to grab before catching a train or even if you’re just passing. It’s apparently really popular with locals and guests alike.
We loved the train travel-inspired design and colour scheme, and particularly the fact that the hotel is stylish without being ostentatious or affected. Most people would feel welcome and able to relax here.
All images are mine as usual except for Plum + Spilt Milk & the exterior shot.
