Some of the most interesting precious jewellery I’ve seen for a long time will be available from Liberty from next month (that’s next week). Alice Cicolini is a graduate of Central St Martin’s MA Jewellery Design and has already exhibited in both the UK and India. Her Silk Route collection for Annoushka is developed from her existing pieces, some of which are seen here.
I first saw Alice’s work at Asia House and was mightily impressed, not only by the design but also by the level of craftsmanship. She works with Indian craftspeople including one of the last meenakari (enamel) masters in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Her use of ebony, precious gems, stone, gold and enamel is innovative yet extremely wearable. Pieces are inspired by Moghul jewellery including the lotus in many forms, a reference to the adoption of buddhist imagery by the muslim rulers of the time.
I can only show a few images here but they should be enough to cause salivation. A word of warning though, we’re talking serious prices here. Having said that, these will be passed lovingly on from our generation to the next and the next… I’d put money on them not losing value either financially or emotionally, but then some of the best buys are for love, not money. The money tends to follow the passion. Enjoy.
