Part 2 of New Designers included furniture and product design, interior & set design as well as illustration. Here are a couple of things I picked out, both from Northumbria University. Interesting for me that the same college’s students pop up even from different courses on different stands. It happened as last week without me even realising till I sat down to write.
Dan Smith was inspired by George Mallory’s climbing jacket, in particular the fact that the technology of that era (1924) can still be still valid today. The Everywhere jacket aims to cover all the bases for performance and adaptability so that you can wear it for work and out while trekking. Hooray at the prospect of one garment that works for both town as well as country without feeling out of place. I’ll be interested to see how this project develops.
Chris Corkery’s library stools are oh so simple and practical as well as designed for mass production. I see them working in both domestic and public environments; in fact they would fit in anywhere.
