New Designers 2 – more Scottish graduates

20/07/2012

These two are both from Edinburgh.

Spyros Kizis showed a thoughtful project to develop a useable material from artichoke thistles and resin produced from waste cooking oil, both readily available resources from Greece, his home. His idea is to use agricultural activity in conjunction with design and manufacturing to produce locally sourced products and encourage self-reliance as the country seeks to rebuild. The material is ultimately biodegradeable after whatever has been produced reaches the end of its life.

These lamps are only one example of the possibilities for his invention.

Emma Goodyear showed a whimsical bedside tree creating the ideal environment for a night full of dreams. It reminded me a bit of “Once Upon A Time”, the TV series with fairytale characters caught up in the present. It avoids too much sweetness with the contrast of hard leaves and the nest-like electrical flex vide-poche.
