New Designers 1 Textile Design

03/07/2012

The selection of work at this show can sometimes be overwhelming; nevertheless some things made me stop to look more closely. I was impressed by the quality from Herriott-Watt University this year and have only just realised whilst writing this that both students below are printers and graduates from Scotland – Meg is from Glasgow School of Art.  More from other colleges and disciplines will follow.

Morvern Odling’s Earth Self Heavens printed squares move from 2 to 3 then back to 2 dimensions through photography. I hadn’t seen print used in quite this way before in an exploration of history and self.

Meg Held, a very different printmaker, uses whatever she finds around her to produce mid-Century inspired block prints for furnishing fabrics. These were created using chunks of wood from the broken-up floor of a former restaurant close to her home. Sustainability is an important aspect of her working practice – other projects have included the re-purposing of polyester fabrics.
