Moss table at Designers Block

14/10/2011

The collaboration that takes place between science and art is always fascinating. I’ve never understood why a separation is deemed necessary – it wasn’t always like that and I believe we need to return to a fluid conversation between all the disciplines. It’s all down to creativity of one form or another.

Anyway as we say in my family, let’s get onto this one: the moss table.

This is the result of design thinking as well as early scientific work in the filed of Biophotovoltaic (BPV) technology at Cambridge University. BPV is basically fuel cells that harness light energy from living sources such as moss, algae etc.

So, the moss is in the table which converts light energy from the sun into enough power for a small device such as a clock or a light display as shown above on the wall . These are early days but provide us with the vision of future energy sources from living plants. Exciting eh?
