Alex Chinneck & Sumarria Lunn: Going for Broke, the unofficial Olympic sculpture

02/08/2012

I was intrigued to learn about this new piece which to me encapsulates so much of the recent history of the East End of London and cycled over for a look on a cloudy evening last week. Sited in Hackney, a mile away from the Olympic Park, this former factory, whose most recent incarnation was as an illicit cannabis farm, is now due for demolition before the end of this year. Before that, however, it has been reclaimed in an artistic intervention by Alex Chinneck supported by Sumarria Lunn Gallery.

We normally see broken windows as a sign of decay and neglect. Here that idea has been subverted with all 312 street-facing broken window panes replicated in one pattern.

To see it yourself, go along Mare Street then turn down Tudor Road.
