Maya Selway silverware

16/11/2010

The first thing I noticed was the silhouette bowl, seen in the middle below, basically a line drawn in metal. Some of them are freestanding and so fragile looking that I  hesitated to hold them. There is no practical use for this or some of the other pieces but  purity and beauty are reason enough. They are contemplative pieces: just looking at them again , even in a photo, conveys something of their impact.

Maya Selway is very influenced by the japanese concept of Wabi-sabi. Nothing lasts, nothing is perfect and nothing is ever really finished. Change and death are two certainties of life and to me her work is a reflection on this.

She’s based at Cockpit Studios in South London. The studios are open to the public for direct sales every year.

This work is now shown in the show “Linientreu” at craft2eu Hamburg – and won the Inhorgenta Award for contemporary Design 2011 last week in Munich!
    Congratulations!
