The first thing I noticed was the silhouette bowl, seen in the middle below, basically a line drawn in metal. Some of them are freestanding and so fragile looking that I hesitated to hold them. There is no practical use for this or some of the other pieces but purity and beauty are reason enough. They are contemplative pieces: just looking at them again , even in a photo, conveys something of their impact.
Maya Selway is very influenced by the japanese concept of Wabi-sabi. Nothing lasts, nothing is perfect and nothing is ever really finished. Change and death are two certainties of life and to me her work is a reflection on this.
She’s based at Cockpit Studios in South London. The studios are open to the public for direct sales every year.
