This has to be one of the most beautiful benches I’ve seen. James Carroll works under the name of Stickman, specialising in using materials discarded by others. It’s the purity of this piece with its chiseled surface and inserts that got me. Show me a good wooden stool and I go weak at the knees; it’s the flexibility that I like – fit for all situations. These are made by Benny Magennis, The Local Maker co. Chairs always seem to be a more serious proposition. I wasn’t able to test any of these out but they certainly look good – different enough to stand out from the mass and stylish without being subject to the fickleness of “fashion”. These two are a collaboration between architectural practice Tierney Haines with maker and architect Alan Meredith Studio created specifically for the exhibition. There were many other makers in the exhibition, Weathering, organised by the Design & Crafts Council Ireland to showcase design & crafts from Ireland.
