Shadow is, for me, a key element in how an object influences its environment. It’s something I have played with over decades, most recently with my Drifts and I find it almost magical.
You can see then why these pieces caught my eye at Collect at Somerset House. Lovely as they are in themselves, the play of shadow is a crucial element for both maker and viewer.
The shadows from Ayako Tani’s calligraphic glass echo the brushstrokes in some of my work.

These lacquered brushstrokes by Mine Tanegawa at SOIL Gallery also made my heart beat a little faster.

The elasticity of time: what looks like a very swift movement has taken many hours of painstaking craftsmanship to achieve.

A wall piece by Marian Bijlenga at Flow Gallery draws using space, not just surface.
