The first UK art fair of the season, the London Art Fair, is one I really look forward to visiting, particularly as January is so miserable. The range of work on show is broad and always of a high quality.
This time I decided to photograph pieces that appealed to me as a collector so here’s a highly personal selection of things that I would buy if I had the budget. Some are artists I already admire, others are new discoveries.
Quadra is a set of woodblock prints (not ink drawings as I first thought) created from drawings by Rebecca Salter and produced in an edition of only 7 by master carvers and printers in Kyoto. Their subtlety is remarkable. All are available through Beardsmore Gallery.
Julian Page showed a selection of prints and sculptures by James Rogers, including this small bronze piece.
Another bronze, this time by Alberto Giacometti at Willoughby Gerrish.
There’s a hint of Marlene Dumas in this set of 6 paintings by Jesse Leroy Smith at Jill George Gallery.

I’m a fan of Nicolas de Staël so this small painting, L’Arc de Triomphe, by Donald Hamilton Fraser showing his direct influence, appealed. Sold by Freya Mitton.

A large drawing by Aythamy Artas was shown by Gallery BR.
This small crayon drawing was a surprise as it’s a landscape by Frank Auerbach. Available from Tanya Baxter Contemporary .
More to follow next week.
