I just had to stop at Karimoku New Standard to admire their highly finished contemporary furniture in washed icecream & acid colours with a mix of Japanese and European influences evident in the shapes. This was their first time at M&O and they tell me they’ve had a great response
The company has been established in Japan since 1940 and made the decision in 2010 to work with international designers in order to produce furniture that would not be vulnerable to the whims of fashion but tuned in to an export market. Everything is made in Japan with production facilities using under-utilised native hardwoods including chestnut, oak and maple, previously only cultivated for the paper industry.
I’d picked up on the colouring which reminded me of Scholten & Baijings who had, in fact, designed some of the pieces on display.
They’ll next be showing at Milan in April so call in to see them if you’re there.
