John Galvin at Design Junction

09/10/2012

Now that the London Design Festival is over I’ll feature some of the products and makers seen over a period of time having decided against rushing everything out just to be close to the event. Showcases are great but they are only a window to the ongoing background of consistent work required for success.

A maker I have admired for a while (see my previous post on him) and whose work just seems to improve is John Galvin who was at Design Junction. He’s top end and expensive but so worth it; your money will be well invested. I stood and stared for a while before having a chat.  This side table, which has a Brazilian air, is exquisitely made.

Just look at that detailing!

He uses the inherent qualities of wood and is known for working with irregularity as in this table

Based in Glasgow some of his wood has come from old whisky casks, stained by decades of contact with the spirit as in this coat rail

You can just see his lamp at the bottom there which has an ingenious brass switch.

One more shot, this time of his chair…
