Collect, the annual fair organised by the Crafts Council, was held once more at Somerset House.
The range and quaity of craftsmanship is always impressive. I already wrote about glass in my last post so will focus on other materials this time.
Korean Gallery Sklo presented sea urchin-like vessels by metal sculptor and jeweller Hyejeong Ko. Each small element looks as if it is held to the others under tension. I could visualise the whole thing separating at any time for the creatures to scuttle off.
The Society of Designer Craftsmen showed these metal discs by Samantha English. Her theme is memory, much like my work; we both use the circle as a key element of our vocabulary.
It took me a few moments to pick out the ridiculously fine metal inlay in these wooden “scribbles” by Joo Hyung Park at Siat Gallery.
Then another clever piece at Five, this time by metal artist Ane Christensen who I’d previously seen at the Goldsmiths’ Fair. Shadows are an intrinsic element to the piece – it would be diminished without them.
