There was little time for exploring on my first trip to LA but I did find myself Downtown and, after a quick manicure at Nails Envy (bluebell nail polish in case you were interested), came across these buildings in what seemed to be the Latino jewellery district. I later read that this was the Theatre district.
Movie theatre of course.
These are Los Angeles’ old buildings – they can only be a 100 years or so at the most but have such romance about them. Just imagine what they must have been in their heyday.
The Los Angeles Theatre was opened in 1931 premiering Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights. It is now mainly used as a location for films and adverts with an interior purported to be modelled on the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles.
I’d have loved to go in for a look as even the pavement is worth appreciating.
The Orpheum building is one of several that appear to have been restored and probably converted into something more sensible.
I love the extravagance of them all.
Downtown is apparently on the up – I hope it keeps some of its ground level grittiness.
