Peter and Sean Leonard recently opened Out Of Town, a cafe, shop and bar in Great Sutton Street which caters to many impulses. When I popped in at about 10am coffees were being served as well as furniture and accessories sold in a very relaxed, almost villagey atmosphere.
The purchasing philosophy is simple: Peter and Sean find things they like and sell them at a reasonable price. Older objects all have a story which they like to uncover and recount to anyone interested. Everything, from the tables to the Fortnum and Mason publicity pamphlets printed in the 1920’s has a tale to tell. Peter gave me detailed background information on the pamphlets and can, I’m sure, give the provenance of everything they have.
In a part of London better known for modern and contract design, Out of Town is a refreshing addition, providing a link to the past and the germ of future ideas.
