London’s Festival of Britain- the Lion and the Unicorn at the South Bank

23/06/2011

Wandering along London’s South Bank I came upon this emotionally moving piece.

The Lion & the Unicorn is an installation created by designer Gitta Gschwendtner with young people from refugee groups in London. The original Lion and the Unicorn pavilion, at the 1951 Festival of Britain, housed a flight of ceramic birds symbolising freedom. This idea has been developed in both spoken and written form with sheets and recordings fluttering in the wind . The words of some of the newest arrivals to the UK pick up from the input of previous refugees who have made their lives here.
