The world premiere of Figures in Extinction at Factory International in Manchester was one of the most powerful theatrical productions I have ever seen.
This was the only UK venue to host it before an international tour.
I’ve been a long-term fan of Complicité, co-founded by Simon McBurney since their foundation in the early 1980s and have followed them ever since.
I discovered Crystal Pite on TV a few years ago – her work had the same impact as my first exposure to Pina Bausch and I think she’s one of the most exciting choreographers around.
Learning that she and McBurney were working together made me determined to see this project, a trilogy which has been 4 years in the making.
Every aspect: staging, lighting, sound, all combined in a profoundly moving reflection of the world as it currently is.
It’s very emotional, ending with a glimmer of hope, something we need in such uncertain times.
Everything is connected. In current Western society we have excised death from life yet need both to exist, something which is core to my own art practice and philosophy.
