Ella Doran is pretty well-known in the world of printed products (see an earlier post of mine) so when we last met I was interested to hear about this project, open in March, in relation to our discussion on the practical value of design.
Ella worked with Vital Arts to create an enchanted yet practically functioning environment for the children’s ward at Barts hospital. As anyone who has spent time in hospital knows only too well, technology and procedures are dominant factors.
The commission involved designing privacy curtains as well as bedside furniture whilst adhering to the stringent hygiene regulations essential in a ward.
It is widely recognised that patients recover more quickly when they have access to views of greenery and nature from their bed. Now children can create stories and imagine different scenarios from the imagery surrounding them. I wonder how something like this would impact on a ward for elderly patients; maybe that is a future project?
