As it was the last day of the sales product wasn’t the best thing to look at on this unscheduled visit. I was entranced instead by the interior of the main department store. It really is grandiose. Unlike the UK, France has very tightly controlled sales periods: they start on the same day all over the country, last for a few weeks and finish on the same day. I think this was the case in England once upon a time – I have a very hazy recollection of this fact. I don’t think the government would dare impose such restrictions here now.
As it is, most of Paris is officially closed for the holidays. The shop shutters are down in my local quartier and the roads are quiet. Nothing much will happen now until Maison & Objet at the beginning of September; all the more reason to enjoy the architecture.
