Chanel’s Byzantium collection

07/01/2011

What impressed me about this collection was the colouring and the amazing embroidery and embellishment. The semi-precious stones and tarnished metal convey an established opulence that is very much an antidote to all the brightness of technological development.

I love technology but you can’t beat a bit of historical interpretation every now and again. I’m afraid the website: www.chanel.com doesn’t give much of a view in the show video but imagine amethyst, tourmaline, peridot, topaz : jasper, labradorite (I love that stone) and amber in mosaic-like constructions set with mucky gold, bronze and pewter.

http://www.luxuryculture.com/luxury-now/byzantium_revived_at_chanel shows some close-up shots. I’m afraid this is the best I can do today in terms of images but think these Ravenna mosaics and you get the idea.
