I’ve only recently discovered Artsy, a US based website launched in 2012 whose mission, in their words ” is to make all the world’s art accessible to anyone with an Internet connection” so thanks Jack for getting in touch.
Their combination of art and science powers the Art Genome Project mapping the over 500 characteristics connecting artists and artworks. (Surely there are many, many more than that?) You can use them to find out about art for reference, (a very comprehensive list of big gallery shows), inspiration as well as purchasing so I recommend a good browse – as ever, I’m the introducer and communicator.
