This fascinating exhibition was hidden away at SOAS (School of Oriental & African Studies) at the University of London.Organised by Society Atelier who are based in Malaysia, the show was understandably heavily biased towards ikat and batik with a range of embroidery techniques. Just look at some of these pieces bearing in mind that everything here has been entirely made by hand.
Indian ikat
Chinese double-sided embroidery on chiffon
Mat weaving from Sarawak
Indian Kantha embroidery.
Many of these are produced at home within the family or in groups; given the time they have taken this must be an essential part of the process.
