Much as I love colour (see my previous post) the key for me lies in drawing.

In this post I look at some of the drawings in this landmark Van Gogh exhibition at The National Gallery.

I mentioned the mark-making last week. See how this tree has a definite Art Nouveau feel about it.

The Olive Trees, 1889

Look at how close the painting is to the original drawing – Van Gogh worked so much out before painting yet each has its own character. And yes, I prefer the drawing.

Some of these drawings, particularly Hill with the Ruins of Montmajour, remind me of Rembrandt, who must have been one of Van Gogh’s inspirations.

None of his paintings would have been possible without the drawings.
