Coming from a mixed-media background I’m always interested to see how textiles are used to convey ideas and emotions.

Threadflux, a group show currently on at White Conduit Projects, shows a selection of work using material in unexpected ways.

Take Cognitive Dissonance by Sarah Impey. The machine-stitched words are sucked into a disconcerting sphincter to a morass of thread, .

Richard McVetis maps time through the repetition of stitch, exploring geological and cosmological time. I find the intensity achieved with such tiny stitching remarkable.

In this piece, Mune, the inclusion of less structured and larger marks feel disruptive, almost chaotic.

The Ribbon series by tapestry weaver Misako Nakahira plays with perception and layering. As in painting, something flat gives the illusion of three-dimensionality.

Taku Hisamura uses paint-spattered clothing as his “canvas” of abstract painting. Both have painted marks on a textile ground with a very different view of their value.
