The use of text – Artist Rooms at Tate Modern

05/06/2023

It’s always interesting to see what’s on in the Artist Rooms when visiting Tate Modern; this time it was all based around the use of text.

I enjoyed these thought-provoking benches by Jenny Holzer using text from Building the Barricade by Anna Świrszczyńska. Take time to read the inscription before sitting down to reflect upon it.

Esrin Coaler by Ellen Gallagher below references the Tuskegee study in the USA from the 1930s, a shocking abuse of black men by the medical establishment.

This piece, by Douglas Gordon, can be interpreted in whichever way the reader chooses.

I’ll end this with a few pictures from some of my favourite artists, the collective known as the Guerrilla Girls.

I recommend you zoom in to read the text.
