The Seven Deadly Sins by Chris Ofili currently at Victoria Miro exemplifies his imaginative interpretation of sin.
I can well believe this series took six years to complete. Not only are the paintings large, the composition of each is with densely worked with figures twisting and intermingling within a verdant flowing world, the handling of paint delicate, almost transparent in places.
The readings are not specific to any particular sin per painting – that would have been too simplistic. I think the artist is considering many complexities including the Christian concept of sin in the first place. Whether you believe in sin or not these are glorious paintings, so enjoy the questions they raise and revel in their lushness.
Oh, the seduction of this work!
