Sohan Qadri was artist, yogi and poet, born in India yet living for over thirty years in Europe. This exhibition , The Seer, at Sundaram Tagore in London is of his works on paper.
Qadri moved away from oil painting on canvas in favour of paper which he considered more suited to the spiritual concerns he explored.
Paper absorbs colour like textiles and these pieces remind me of stitching, piercing and some of the traditional embroidery and dyeing techniques found in India.
The paper scars when marked – like skin, evidence of a life lived.
These pieces are quiet and contemplative. Take the time to look and let the details reveal themselves through slow looking.
