Whenever I’m at Tate Modern I pop into Bankside Gallery next-door.
Home to the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) and Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE) this is very much a selling exhibition space.
A recent show was RE Original Prints 2023 where I spotted these two books in a display cabinet, both by Sioban Piercy. They were such a contrast to the two-dimensionality of the rest of the exhibition and I was struck by the elemental qualities of both pieces.
Small Impatient Object (Book Two)
Folded flat they give no indication of the worlds contained within.
Open them up and these very different sculptural constructions appear.
Small Impatient Object (Book Two) is crystalline while Small Keeping Object below evokes kites in a breeze. and that’s just the first impression. Keep looking and there is so much more to discover.
What do you see in them?
