One of the first galleries I visited post-lockdown, James Freeman exhibited Together, a show of recent paintings by Sikelela Owen, whose work I have featured in the past.
I enjoyed seeing her contemporary reinterpretations using tropes from the history of art, including the odalisque above, in this case luxuriating on a sandy beach and below.
I enjoyed the transparency and liquidity of the paint, dripping down the canvas, almost melting in the heat.
Her paintings of children have a softness, their forms edging to dream and uncertainty, the stuff of memory.
