This is a bit delayed due to travelling and some IT problems so my apologies.
This years’ show had more room as the Fine Art students are now all exhibiting in Battersea. It was still very packed and is a challenge for the graduates to represent 2 years of work in a tiny space. As ever, there is way too much to report for my 2 minute blog posts but here are a few who stood out for me.
I’m always intrigued to learn of new material developments and this year I found fishscales and orange peel, both of which are produced as waste product in massive quantities.
Eric de Laurens has worked on producing a new material from the scales which otherwise just go to waste. It’s interesting that not only is the material waterproof (OK, that’s a bit obvious) but also flame retardant. Now that was a bit of a surprise. As shown here , it can be cut, moulded, sanded. Let’s hope it gets picked up on soon.
Alkesh Parmar turned his attention to orange peel again with the idea of transforming a waste product into a useful one – the cradle to cradle principle as this end product is also fully biodegradable (patent pending).
He’s interested in light too and showed a champagne cork chandelier as well as water bottle lamp.
