This has been sitting in my drafts for ages as I was waiting for written permission from Gagosian London to post these images taken of the Richard Serra show at Britannia Row. Their silence indicating assent, here it is.
I sometimes try to focus on a purely sensory response when looking at art which was the case here. It never ceases to surprise me how the experience of an object can induce such strong emotions; mine ranged from bouncing exhilaration through to foreboding.
Backdoor Pipeline was enhanced by listening to the underground trains passing below. Sound, or the lack of it, is for me at least, an important element of Richard Serra’s work. It isn’t just about monumentality.
Each room contained one piece of work; four rooms, four pieces. Dead Load,
the menacing London Cross and
Ramble, all accurate names which could be viewed as location-specific to this gallery close to Kings Cross Station.
If you missed this you can always see Fulcrum, his piece outside Liverpool Street Station in London.
