Ram Samocha is probably best known for creating Draw to Perform, a community of performative drawing artists. Indeed I first came across him over a weekend of performance and participatory mark-making several years ago.
This solo exhibition, Abstract Space, at Lewisham Arthouse, consists of black and white works on paper.
Given world events over the past few years Samocha wanted to look out beyond the conflict on our planet, using the gaps (15mm) between sheets as panes in a window.
They are external, imaginary landscapes.
Some were made with his eyes closed, guided only by the sound of his mark-making. An intuitive, meditative act using drawing as a means of exploration.
Look at the pressure of marks, their energy on the paper, as well as their distribution.
