Matthew Picton at Sumarria Lunn Gallery, London

09/03/2012

I happened upon Sumarrai Lunn quite by chance – an open door in a green wall with stairs leading down was too tempting to resist – and I’m so glad I did. Although Will Lunn was gingerly recovering from the private view the night before it didn’t stop him telling me about their space.

London 1940-44

The current exhibition, Urban Narratives, features the work of Matthew Picton. I’ve always had a thing about maps and dictionaries: as soon as they’re finished they’re out of date so represent a particular moment and feeling. Matthew Picton’s maps reproduce places beautifully with great sensitivity of association.

Dublin detail

London and Dublin were the first ones I noticed with connections pinging as soon as I began to look properly. I’m just sorry I can’t include more here.

The show is on till 6th April so go if you possibly can. And thanks Will for sending me your photos to supplement mine.
