I wasn’t expecting Life Between Islands: Caribbean-British Art 1950s – Now, currently on at Tate Britain, to be as large as it was so give yourself plenty of time to take it all in. Here are just a few snaps of work I connected with – as ever, too much to include in a one-minute post.
The Aubrey Williams painting stopped me as soon as I walked in to the show. Seeing the title made me smile as Shostakovich had obviously connected us; his music remains important in my work too.
Donald Locke‘s installation reminded me at first sight of the Lingam in Hinduism but many more associations (and not just the obvious) flooded in once I looked more closely.
These tender drawings by Barbara Walker shock and dismay. Portraits of her son drawn on photocopies of the police forms every time he was stopped and searched, just because of the way he looked.
Keith Piper‘s 14 piece series Go West Young Man. Read/watch all of it in the link.
Ending this with the glorious colouring of paintings by Lisa Brice
