This is the first solo exhibition by painter Justin Caguiat at Modern Art gallery Helmet Row and my first viewing of his work.
I was struck by visual resonances with Gustav Klimt, particularly evident in this blue painting, something I really hadn’t expected. The rich pattern and feeling of other-worldliness with figures hidden and emerging.
Whilst having an instant impact these are not quick-view paintings. You can see fantastical stories in imaginary worlds with strange creatures – it isn’t surprising to read that science-fiction is one of his influences along with folk tales and 60’s psychedelia.
And yet it’s all quite beautiful.
I like the richness and complexity of unstretched canvas nailed in a simple wooden tray frame, a confidently sophisticated way of presenting the work.
