Well, here are more photos from this show of Jessica Rankin at White Cube as I have now seen the work in the flesh. It’s even more impressive and moving in real life than in the photos I had shared last month. I also noticed while there that most, if not all of the exhibits are dated 2020.
Some of these paintings actually took my breath away. There was so much that I connected with; I have been inspired to return to some ideas and techniques from a few years ago that I didn’t develop further at the time.
Look at how she integrates stitching and painting, adding the three-dimensional colour and sculptural quality of thread, adding a structural layer then sometimes applying more paint.
Titles are stitched onto the sides, extending the painting as an object.
It was interesting to see the development of ideas on paper and smaller canvases
as well as the witty postcards too easily missed in the corridor but the stars of the show, for me at least, were her large canvases.
