Reading about Daniel McLaughlin’s wool yarn suitcase in Designboom reminded me that I hadn’t shared my pick of the Innovation Design Engineering graduates. This course throws up some of the most interesting ideas with an emphasis on new uses for waste material and ways to better the lives of the global majority. Here’s a small selection for you including Daniel’s Biowool fibre moulded suitcase which is composed of waste wool fibre and rapeseed oil-based resin
This perambulating washing machine was devised by Idrees Rasouli. and uses over 30% less water than hand washing saving massive amounts of time and energy, for people in developing countries.
Peter Krige works on different technologies (including micro hydro electricity generation) aimed at improving the lives of slum dwellers all over the world
Victor Monserrate has created the Ingenio plastic recycling machine, composed of bicycle parts, which produces yarn from waste plastic. This can then be used to weave, for example, furniture seats and other items for the local market.
