Titled Distant Shores, this exhibition of monoprints and paintings by Hamish Macaulay was held at Eames Fine Art.

The distant shores refer to New Zealand, the artist’s home country which he has returned to after living for many years in the UK. What I find interesting about these latest pieces is the way he uses the landscape format as a launchpad for his exploration into colour and tone.

The influence of Japanese woodcuts can be seen, particularly in some of the colour combinations.

I enjoy the celebration of materiality and process: see how ink sits on paper, the texture made when it’s lifted, the ripples and scratches, the size and direction of the roller. It’s all there to look at.

In this piece the horizon is reduced to a mist-like smudge, to elements of light and texture.
