Drawing is a key element in the language of art. It’s the way we gather information and communicate ideas, a tool which doesn’t have to be perfect. As long as the information is conveyed then the job has been done.

Designs on Silver, this online exhibition from Goldsmiths Fair is an enjoyable way to see just how the intricate processes of silversmiths are figured out on paper before making anything. I loved clicking on each image to learn more.

Styles range from very detailed with a high level of draftsmanship like Jane Short below


to more sketchy, evoking movement like Sheila McDonald’s Shetland Bird vase drawings.

or Theresa Nguyen’s floral drawings for her Spiritus centrepiece.

Rosamond Conway’s Wafer box is meticulously worked out

whereas Mark Nuell’s sketch , torn from an exercise book, works out the facets in a double sapphire ring.
