One of the most famous artists of the 20th Century, Georg Baselitz died earlier this year after a successful career spanning over six decades.
This show at White Cube Bermondsey was titled Back Again, referring to motifs revisited:
the eagle,
(the camera couldn’t handle the colours in this detail shot)
the figure of the “hero”
and his wife, partner and muse Elke Kretzschmar.
The contrast of gold ground with splashes of bright colour reminds you to look at the painting, not the narrative.
One of Baselitz’s key concerns was that his work was about paint, not story.
